My alternative explanation of Bulleh Shah’s kafi “Bullah kee jana mein kaun?” is as follows. It is possible that the lyrics refer to the innumerable passages of the Soul through reincarnation cycles leading to a loss of identity of the Soul such that Bulleh Shah cries out “Who am I, really? “
In the image below, a man looks into his reflection in the mirror. He feels as if his Soul is peering at him from behind his eyes. The Soul has passed through so many reincarnation cycles that it is trying to recognize the man. Who are you? his Soul asks him.
